Perfume is an absolute essential to my beauty routine. It is the last thing I do before leaving the house and the first thing friends and colleagues notice when I walk into a room. I've struggled to find a signature scent, as many of the perfumes I've loved of late end up being scents others love to wear as well. I've tried Elizabeth & James Nirvana Black, just about every Marc Jacobs scent, and I've recently been trying out Commodity Gold. But none of those felt exactly like me.
I've been lusting over Jo Malone colognes for years. Since August is my birthday month and I "happened" to wander into an airport shop during my return from Rhode Island that carries the brand, I decided to treat myself (big time). I worked with with an amazing sales assistant who worked endlessly to help me find my perfect fragrance (and at a better price than online). I wanted something warm, sexy, a balance of feminine and masculine, and I found it in Jo Malone Velvet Rose & Oud. The scent lingers throughout the day after only one spritz. It isn't overwhelming, but long lasting. Because it's alcohol based instead of oil based, it has a shelf life of 15 years. From its bottle and scent to the packaging it came in everything about this Jo Malone fragrance is luxe.
My interest in Jo Malone came from taking a cheeky peek at my great aunt's dressing table in her Providence home a few years ago. Shown in the photo above, she's clearly one of the loveliest people you've ever seen. A former model in Paris, New York, and Hong Kong, my Great Aunt Izzy is stylish and effortlessly chic. She was even able to work for Givenchy where she modeled clothes for Audrey Hepburn when she didn't have time to try them on (as they looked eerily similar). While my goal was to finally discover my signature scent with Jo Malone, I'm proud to say it was heavily influenced by Izzy's impeccable taste.
