August has been a month of some pretty solid favorites. In addition to being my birthday month, August brought on an apartment move, the one-year anniversary of my Papa Kane's passing (which was on my birthday), and a month of cleansing.
Because of my move I wanted to downsize and cleanse my home of unnecessary clutter. This was brought on by moving apartments, but it was also because of the book I read this month. I cleared out my makeup collection and wardrobe, and purged many of the items that were stifling my ability to live a peaceful, fulfilled life. It's amazing - sometimes we get into a habit of needing things to feel fulfilled. But I now realize that things and stuff have been weighing down my heart and my mind. My cleanse allowed me to better appreciate the people and moments I have in my life and made the things I already own become more enjoyable.
In the beauty category I've really been loving starting my routine with the Smashbox Photo Finish Primer Water. It might seem like a useless product (and maybe it is), but it refreshes my skin and prepares it for the rest of my makeup. In the hot, muggy summer months, I won't argue with a product that feels hydrating and refreshing. For my base I went back to an old favorite. Laura Mercier recently repackaged her Silk Creme Oil Free Photo Edition Foundation, which still allowed the product to be my perfect foundation match. It can be quite full coverage, but when applied with a damp beauty blender the product melts into my skin. For an added glow, I've been using the unbelievably raved-about Becca x Jaclyn Hill Pressed Shimmering Skin Perfector in Champagne Pop. Beauty editors and YouTubers can't stop talking about this product, and that's because it's bomb. For my birthday one of my best friends gave me the gorgeous Albeit lipstick in Poppy, which is the most stunning orange-red color. The formula is creamy and rich without feeling heavy, but the pigmentation is crazy good and long lasting. Once my makeup is all off my face, I've been loving treating myself to the Mario Badescu Flower & Tonic Mask. It's very fluid, but dries matte and pulls some of the nasties out of my skin. Finally, I've been so in love with my Jo Malone Velvet Rose & Oud cologne. I mentioned that I'd found my signature scent when I first purchased it and my stance remains the same after having it for a month. The scent is warm and sexy and resurfaces throughout the day. I'll find myself catching a whiff and thinking, "dang, who smells like a babe?"
What really turned this month into something special for me (besides my friends and family) was Marie Kondo's The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. Yet another raved-about item, this book is just as its name suggests - life-changing and magical. I've always been a tidier and organizer. I like when my belongings have a place and I feel so much more relaxed when I'm in a clean, decluttered space. But this book was about more than cleaning up. It allowed me to let go of the importance of things and stuff. It deemphasized material possessions for me and gave me more space for myself, my family, my friends and making lasting memories. I've been able to detach myself from excess so I can appreciate what I have and place more of my heart into what truly matters in life. Not to mention it made moving to a new apartment so much easier with fewer boxes to transport. The book's philosophy has also poured into other areas of my life - I want to take back my health. It's inspired me to eat healthier and kinder, exercise, and take care of my body again. If you haven't yet read this book, I'm telling you it's amazing. If you've been looking for a sign to make your life better HERE IT IS. In the same organization vein, I've been loving my Rifle Paper Co. planner. This thing is beautiful, but it's so functional and well-layed-out, which makes actually using it possible.
This last favorite is something I never would have thought would be on my radar, much less my feet. It's my Birkenstock-style sandals from American Eagle. These puppies haven't really left my feet since I purchased them (I'm wearing them as I type this). They've already molded to my feet and become the most comfortable summer shoes I own.
August was jam-packed and beautiful. Thank you to all who made my birthday special and allowed my move to be as smooth as it was. Also, a big thanks to Rachel and Seth Alwin for being my August Meet the Midwest artists AND congratulations to my friend Jenny for winning their giveaway! September's artist is someone very special and talented, so keep your eyes peeled.
Here's to a successful, love-filled September, y'all!
