My go-to red lipsticks

My go-to red lipsticks

*I apologize for the different lighting from photo to photo. I use natural light, which obviously likes to do its own thing.

The red lip has been a beauty staple since the 16th century, and before that folks were using plants, beeswax and anything else they could find to add a rosy tint to their complexions. To me, there is nothing more classic than a red lip. Years of seeing my beautiful mom rock a red lip has undoubtedly inspired me to do the same as an adult. I've been known to go red whether I'm dressed up or wearing jeans and a t-shirt (I happen to think that's the most chic way to wear it). I prefer matte formulations in a red lip product for their longevity, but if I'm craving a more natural look I always reach for a lip butter, which offers a fuss-free fade throughout the day. There are several makeup brands from high end to drugstore that have beautiful red lip options, but I find that NARS, MAC, Sephora Collection and Korres have the five I reach for most often. From pigmentation to wear time, these brands have the red lip mastered.

Korres Lip Butter in Wild Rose - this is my lazy-day lip product when I want to brighten up my face and look like I put in some effort on my makeup. The formulation is so hydrating and the pigmentation is perfectly sheer. The Korres Lip Butters in general are amazing (I have one in my purse and on my bedside table at all times).

NARS Audacious Lipstick in Annabella - if you want crazy pigment and a semi-matte formula that doesn't dry out your lips, the NARS Audacious Lipsticks are worth the investment, in my opinion. If there is any product from this list you decide to try, let it be this. The color range is vast and stunning, so even if Annabella isn't your perfect red, you're bound to find one that is.

MAC Matte Lipstick in Lady Danger - if the name of this next product alone doesn't win you over, I don't know what will. Traditionally I've reached for red lip products with blue undertones, but when I stumbled upon Lady Danger I knew orange-based reds could have a place in my makeup bag as well. Lady Danger is an unpredictable red that suits so many skin tones and makes me feel like one babelicious lady.

NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Cruella - no red lipstick overview would be complete without a NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil. These things are insane in terms of pigmentation and wear time. Cruella can last through drinks, dinner and  (I'm just guessing here) a few kisses. Some might find these pencils to be a little drying, but it personally doesn't bother me. I just make sure to moisturize my lips before applying it.

Sephora Collection Cream Lip Stain in 01 Always Red - if you want a red lip that won't budge even in a hurricane, the Sephora Collection Cream Lip Stain is your guy. A light and steady hand is required when applying this product because once it has settled on the lips it's not going anywhere. This can also be a bit drying, but folks who don't mind that aspect of it will find Always Red to be a great option for a set-it-and-forget-it red lip color.
